The reasons people come for counselling are very varied.
You may have some idea about what you are struggling with, or you may just know that things are not as they should or could be for you. The support of counselling can help to cope with stresses in life at a time when family and friends are struggling to support us.
If you are unsure about whether counselling, psychotherapy or EMDR may be the right step for you, then feel free to make contact for an informal chat to check this out.

I am an accredited EMDR therapist and a member of the EMDR Association UK and Ireland

I have been working in private practice for over 25 years. Prior to this I worked in an organisation that provided counselling and group work.

  • Individuals and couples
  • Emotional eating
  • Depression
  • Low self esteem and self confidence
  • Childhood trauma
  • Relationship difficulties

Therapy.uk.net - Getting started and cost

Cost involved

How much will it cost?

Counselling can be a short-term investment that can have life-enhancing effects.
  • Individual appointments are £50-£65
  • EMDR appointments are £55-£85 per hour
  • Couples appointments are £65
  • Supervision fee is £50-60 per hour (self-funded); organisations and trainee counsellors to be discussed
  • Appointments funded by employers and other organisations start at £65
In some cases I am able to offer concessions for day time appointments, please feel free to ask me about this.

How many times will we need to meet?

We will have an initial meeting for you to tell me more about what is bringing you to counselling and for you to establish whether you feel comfortable with me. It is then usual to agree to meet for 6 sessions, then to review.

You may ring or email me as your first point of contact.

For supervision work I offer an initial telephone conversation, to ensure that it is appropriate for me to supervise you in the work that you do.

Short term work

If there is a specific problem then short term work is sometimes appropriate. 6 to 12 sessions can often produce a change that is noticeable and long lasting. These meeting are usually weekly although at times longer gaps may occur in order to work around an external event.

Longer term work

Some people seek or need longer term work (from several months to a few years). There will be review points during this time to check that you are getting what you want from the work.
Therapy.uk.net - What is counselling?

What is counselling?

Counselling is:
  • A confidential space for exploring difficult issues in a non-judgemental environment
  • A time to reflect on your life and a space to heal
  • A space to see how you have got to where you are, and how to move towards a healthier and happier life
  • The chance to look at how to change things for yourself.
  • An opportunity to talk through decisions, without someone telling you what you should do
If you want to know more do call or email, I am more than happy to answer any queries you may have about counselling.
Therapy.uk.net - EMDR

EMDR

If you wish to work on a present or past trauma, a one-off major trauma or a number of smaller traumas, EMDR could be appropriate. For example EMDR can be useful for those who are struggling to recover after witnessing or experiencing an event like a car accident, a violent crime or the sudden loss of a loved one, as well as many of life’s other traumas.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It is a client-focused therapy that helps people recover from problems triggered by traumatic events in their lives. It helps the brain to reprocess difficult memories properly, thus reducing distress.

EMDR is perhaps best known for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as this was one of its original uses; it can also help with a range of mental health conditions in people of all ages.

The theory underpinning the work is based on the brain’s information processing system which naturally moves toward mental health.  If the system is blocked or imbalanced by the impact of a disturbing event, the emotional wound festers and can cause distress and suffering.  Once the block is removed, healing resumes.  Using the detailed protocols and procedures learned in EMDR training sessions, therapists help clients activate their natural healing processes.

I am an accredited EMDR therapist and a member of the EMDR Association UK and Ireland

Therapy.uk.net - Couples counselling

Couples counselling

When a relationship stops working we can be deeply affected, and our health and happiness suffers. Pressure of work, family, money and health problems and other life events all take their toll.

Couple or relationship counselling can help you to understand destructive patterns, to improve communication and to learn new relationship skills. A relationship can move forward to a more satisfying place through work with a suitably trained counsellor.

Therapy.uk.net - Emotional eating

Emotional eating

We are all bombarded with information about what is healthy for us to eat, and yet a lot of people find it hard not to over-eat or binge. Sometimes this leads to us being overweight, sometimes to being an OK weight but unhealthy and lacking in energy.

Looking at our eating from numerous aspects can help us develop an easier relationship to eating and to ourselves. It is usually helpful to look at our self-esteem, our expectations of ourselves and others, and our addictive desire for food.

Therapy.uk.net - Stress in the workplace

Stress in the workplace

Work stress can show itself in symptoms such as mood disturbance, sleep disruption, upset stomach, headaches and problems in relationships.

Stress management can support you to deal better with stress and explore changes that may be possible.

Out of work life can also contribute to work stress. By looking at such issues as loss, relationship difficulties and life stage crisis, stress can be managed differently and with less impact on work and health.
